Colman's Story | Gehrig's Story | Katelyn's Story

Colman Maloy Collins was born March 30, 2004 at Methodist Hospital in San Antonio, Texas. He weighed 6lbs. 13 oz. and was 20 inches long. Dr.James Rogers, a pediatric cardiologist, made the diagnosis of Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome in utero just five weeks earlier after a routine sonogram at 20 weeks showed an asymmetry in the heart.

Colman Dr. Rogers then laid out our options as follows:

  1. Management of this illness consisting of three heart surgeries performed the first three years of life
  2. Heart transplant; or
  3. Palliative care.

In retrospect, I am glad we knew about Colman's heart condition before he was born. It was a heart-wrenching five weeks, but it allowed us the time to find out as much as possible about HLHS and make informed and educated decisions about our baby's healthcare. My husband and I decided that the first option was the best option for our family. On April 1, 2004, Colman was transported to University Hospital and underwent the Norwood Procedure on April 2, 2004. Dr. John Calhoon performed the surgery and was assisted by Dr.John Kupferschmid. Colman came through the surgery and was released from the hospital on April 19,2004.

At four months of age, on August 6, 2004, Colman was admitted into Christus Santa Rosa Children's Hospital for his second surgery, performed by Dr. Calhoon, who was assisted by Dr. Jorge Salazar. Colman came through that surgery with flying colors and was sent home after only five days in the hospital.

During our stays at University Hospital and Christus Santa Rosa Children's Hospital, the doctors and nurses have been phenomenal. They have taken wonderful care of Colman and answered all of our questions in a courteous and caring fashion. Dr.Rogers and Dr. Calhoon are very open, honest and candid, which is something we have really appreciated. They have put together a terrific team of doctors and nurses to care for these very ill children.

Colman is now a year old and doing great. He is on track developmentally. He is a wonderful little boy, who is always quick to smile. He has no idea that there is anything wrong with his heart. His favorite things, at the moment, are eating and tormenting his older brother, Liam, by getting into his "Hot Wheels" Collection every chance he gets.

Sincerely,
Heather and Kevin Collins
