Dr. Thomas C. Mayes, a native of El Paso, Texas received a Bachelor of Science degree from Baylor University, his MD from Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington D.C. and a M.B.A. from The University of Texas at San Antonio. He moved to San Antonio in 1984 to pursue his pediatric residency training at Wilford Hall USAF medical Center and subsequently did fellowship training at Baylor College of Medicine/Texas ChildrenŐs Hospital in Houston. He is certified by the American Board of Pediatrics in pediatrics and pediatric critical care Medicine.

Dr. Mayes is currently Professor and Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. He has served in a number of leadership roles in the medical school and community including the Associate Dean of Clinical Affairs in the School of Medicine, President/CEO of the University Physicians Group, medical Director of the Janey Briscoe ChildrenŐs Center at University Hospital, medical Director of the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and Pediatric Transport Program at CHRISTUS Santa Rosa ChildrenŐs Hospital, and member of the National Advisory Committee for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Program, ŇImproving Asthma Care for ChildrenÓ. He has also served on the Board of Directors of the ChildrenŐs Bereavement Center of South Texas and as an inaugural member of the Masters Leadership Program of San Antonio and Bexar County.

Dr. Pietz graduated from the University of Texas at San Antonio in 1988 with a Bachelor of Science degree. He received his medical degree at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA) in 1992. He did his pediatric internship at Phoenix ChildrenŐs Hospital and Maricopa medical Center in Phoenix, Arizona and completed his residency training at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa. He then remained on faculty at the University of Iowa in the division of general pediatrics. He returned to the UTHSCSA to do his fellowship training in pediatric critical care in 1998 and remained on faculty after completing his fellowship training.

He is Board Certified in General Pediatrics and also certified by the Subboard of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine. He is also the medical Director of the Christus Santa Rosa ChildrenŐs Hospital Pediatric Transport Team. His clinical interests include post-operative care of children with congenital heart disease, resident and fellow education, and transport of the critically ill child.
